About Humphrey, Covill, & Coleman

We Are Independent Insurance Agents

We do not work for any one insurance company. We work for YOU, helping you when you have a loss, and making sure you are paid promptly and fairly. The insurance companies that we represent are carefully chosen, reputable companies. This enables us to select the best coverage for you at competitive, affordable prices.

HCC_About_UsWho We Are

We are a family business! We believe in personal relationships with our clients. Once you become a client, you are considered family. You can expect to receive personal service from a staff of qualified professionals.

Humphrey, Covill & Coleman Insurance Agency, Inc. as it is now known was founded in 1926 by Ernest J. Humphrey and Raymond F. Covill, both former Liberty Mutual Insurance Company employees.  In 1948 following his graduation from Yale University and brief tour of duty as a Naval Officer and an employee of INA, Philip L. Coleman, Humphrey’s nephew, joined the agency and shortly thereafter the partnership became “Humphrey, Covill & Coleman”.  After a career that spanned 39 years, Coleman as President retired from the agency in 1987.

Upon graduation from Brown University, and a tour of duty with the U.S. Army, Raymond A. Covill, joined the agency in 1956. Raymond Covill is a past director of Independent Insurance Agents of Massachusetts. Covill’s son, Peter Covill, joined the agency in 1984 and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in business management in 1996 from the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth.  Peter served as president of the Massachusetts User Group of Applied Systems from 1995-1997. He has also served on many community boards.  He is currently the treasurer of Summit Referral Group. Raymond Covill’s daughter, Elizabeth C. Gibson (Lisa), joined the agency in 1991.  Lisa is a graduate of Tabor Academy in Marion, MA and graduated cum laude from Boston University in 1989 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology. She handles both personal and commercial lines.  Lisa lives in Marion with her husband and two sons.  We are currently on our third generation of Covills and we are now training the fourth generation!

The principals are active in many local organizations and believe in giving back to our community.  In addition to the principals, our employees continue to be updated in all phases of the industry by continuing education and regular attendance at seminars conducted by Massachusetts Association of Insurance Agents and other insurance trade groups.  All Account Managers hold their Massachusetts broker’s license.

Since 1988 we have been headquartered at our current location following the purchase of land and the subsequent construction of a new office in a prime area of downtown New Bedford.  This highly visible location offers adequate parking for our customers and direct access from the downtown connector off Route I-195.
